Ken Kaneki is the main protagonist of the Tokyo Ghoul series. He is currently Touka Kirishima's husband and Ichika Kaneki's father. Previously, he was a student who studied Japanese literature at Kamii University and lived a relatively normal life. However, this changed quickly after Rize Kamishiros Kakuhou was transplanted into him and turned into a one-eyed ghoul. Kaneki is the first known artificial one-eyed ghoul. Its unique half-ghoul state later inspired the idea of the Quinx.

When he was a child, Kaneki had all the qualities that he now has as an adult with black hair. As a normal university student, Kaneki was a somewhat small and thin young man with little to no sporting background and preferred to read books. After the steel beam incident, Kaneki has a scar from the transplant on the right side of his stomach, not far from his navel. In his spare time he wore casual clothes.

His casual outfit consists of a turquoise hoodie, light black pants, running shoes with a yellow toe and blue outlines that extend to the middle of the black sole base.

At work, he wore Anteiku's standard waiter uniform, consisting of black trousers and a gray vest over a white shirt and black tie (brown tie in the anime). Since he could not yet properly control his individual kakugan, which is manifested in his left eye, he wore a medical eye patch to cover it.

His ghoul mask resembles a leather gimp mask with an eye patch. It has a calm mouth with large, gnashing teeth, similar to a reserved asylum monster. The bolts sticking out of his neck and the fact that he's an artificial ghoul are reminiscent of a Frankenstein-like theme.

After being tortured by Yamori, his appearance changed drastically. His hair turned completely white, his nails were blackened and he developed a more muscular build. He began to prefer monochrome clothing and wore a figure-hugging black body with cutouts during the fight.
