Mako is a hyperactive, carefree, and loving girl who seems to cling to everyone she is friends with, a fact underscored by the fact that she very quickly becomes inseparable from Ryūko. She is also quite lazy, as shown by going to bed when classes start, humorously clashing with her hyperactivity.

After the fight between Ryūko and the boxing club captain Takaharu Fukuroda, Mako met with Ryūko when her family took her in. The next day, she invited Ryūko to stay with her and her family while they went to school. She was unimpressed despite being relentlessly bombarded in the face with tennis balls. Mako was arrested the day before by tennis club captain Omiko Hakodate for lack of practice, although she was being held hostage at the time. Ryūko saved her as she was tied to a post and tennis balls were thrown at her from all sides. Mako argued against Uzu Sanageyama when he tried to blame Ryūko, leading to a tennis match between Ryūko and Omiko. After the match was won, Mako fled with Ryūko under the guise of improvised steam.
