Scruffy Scruffington
Futurama

Planet Express janitor, man of few words, and the only person at the company who has never once expressed concern about anything happening around him.

🧹

Scruffy Scruffington is Planet Express’s janitor in Futurama — a man whose emotional range runs from mild indifference to complete indifference, and who has been present for most of the show’s major events without appearing to register any of them. He refers to himself in the third person, reads magazines during crises, and once had a tender moment with a washbot that the show never followed up on. His look is pure working man: dark green long-sleeve work shirt over a grey t-shirt, green work trousers, brown work boots, a brown twill cap worn slightly forward, a thick grey walrus mustache, a tool belt, and a push broom. Nine pieces that together create one of the most recognizable supporting characters in animated science fiction.

How to Style It

The mustache is the most important single element of the Scruffy costume — it’s what converts “man in a green work uniform” to “unmistakably Scruffy Scruffington.” The mustache needs to be thick, grey, and drooping — a full walrus style, not a trim handlebar or a neat pencil mustache. Apply it centered above the upper lip using the included adhesive or spirit gum, pressing firmly for 30 seconds. Once it’s on, leave it alone. The mustache should look like it has been there for a very long time and has never been particularly tended to, which is completely consistent with the character.

The work shirt goes over the grey t-shirt, worn open like a jacket rather than buttoned to the collar — the grey tee should be visible at the neckline. Both the shirt and trousers should be a matching dark green, similar to classic workwear or military utility green. The shirt can be tucked or left out; Scruffy’s shirt in the show sits in a middle territory that’s neither fully tucked nor clearly untucked. The tool belt goes over the shirt at the waist, giving additional visual definition to the middle of the outfit.

The brown twill cap should sit level on the head, pulled slightly forward — Scruffy wears his cap straight and close to the brow, not tilted or pushed back. Brown work boots with visible laces complete the look at the bottom. The push broom is the signature prop: use it for photos held upright in both hands, the classic janitor’s pose, and lean it against the nearest wall for the rest of the evening. Carrying a full-size broom all night is precisely as impractical as it sounds.

Mustache Application

Apply the fake mustache with spirit gum or the included adhesive on clean, dry, makeup-free skin for the best hold. Press firmly across the full width for at least 30 seconds before releasing. Test the adhesion by gently tugging before leaving the house. A mustache that falls off at a party is a problem Scruffy would not have patience for.

Layering the Shirts

Put the grey t-shirt on first, then layer the green work shirt over it with two or three buttons undone from the collar. The grey tee should be visible at the neckline — this layered look is specific to Scruffy’s design in the show. Don’t button the work shirt all the way up; that changes the silhouette entirely.

Tool Belt Positioning

The tool belt sits at the natural waist, over the work shirt. Fasten it snugly so it doesn’t slide down during the evening. A tool belt that hangs loosely at the hips looks like a prop; one that sits correctly at the waist looks like part of the job. Scruffy is, whatever else he may be, a professional janitor.

Hat Placement

Pull the brown twill cap down level with the forehead, brim roughly a finger’s width above the eyebrows. Scruffy’s cap in the show sits low and level — not tilted, not pushed to the back. The low brim adds to the general vibe of a man who has seen enough and expects to see more of the same.

The Push Broom Strategy

Bring the broom for arrival and photos, then find a corner to park it. A full-size push broom is genuinely unwieldy at a crowded event. For posed photos, hold it upright with both hands at the handle, broom head on the floor — this is Scruffy’s natural resting position and photographs well. After photos, the broom is officially someone else’s problem.

Playing Scruffy

Scruffy’s energy is one of total self-possession in the face of complete indifference to everything around him. Respond to all questions and dramatic revelations with a slight nod and the phrase “Scruffy” in the third person. If someone asks you what you think of the situation developing around you, look at them, look away, and say nothing. That’s Scruffy. That’s all Scruffy ever does, and it’s enough.

Group & Couple Ideas

Planet Express Duo

Scruffy & Fry

Scruffy and Philip J. Fry make an unlikely but immediately readable Futurama pairing — the delivery boy who doesn’t know what he’s doing and the janitor who knows exactly what he’s doing and simply doesn’t care. Fry’s red jacket and wide-eyed energy against Scruffy’s green work uniform and thousand-yard stare captures something essential about Planet Express as a functioning organization.

Futurama Trio

Scruffy, Leela & Zapp Brannigan

A three-character Futurama group that covers the show’s operational, military, and custodial functions simultaneously. Leela in her white tank and combat boots, Zapp in his crimson DOOP uniform, and Scruffy in his green work gear alongside a push broom creates a group where two people are actively doing things and one person is technically also present. The dynamic writes itself.

Full Planet Express

Scruffy, Professor Farnsworth & Dr. Zoidberg

Three of Planet Express’s most eccentric supporting characters together in one group — the ancient distracted professor in his white lab coat, the hapless crustacean alien, and the janitor who has witnessed all of it and remains unmoved. Three completely distinct visual looks that together cover the full absurdity of the Planet Express organization. Any Futurama fan at the party will immediately start filling in the rest of the cast.

Complete Futurama Ensemble

The Full Planet Express Crew

When everyone commits to the full Futurama ensemble — Fry, Leela, Zapp, Professor Farnsworth, Dr. Zoidberg, and Scruffy — the group becomes one of the most complete animated cast costumes available. Scruffy’s role in this configuration is perfect: stand slightly apart from the group, look at the camera without expression, and be technically present without appearing to be engaged with any of the proceedings. This is precisely what Scruffy does in the show.

Frequently Asked Questions

Scruffy Scruffington wears a dark green long-sleeve work shirt over a grey t-shirt, green work trousers, brown work boots, a brown twill cap, and a tool belt around his waist. His defining feature is a thick grey walrus mustache. He usually carries a push broom — the most recognizable janitor prop in all of animated science fiction and the detail that makes every photo immediately work.

Scruffy Scruffington is from Futurama, the animated sci-fi comedy created by Matt Groening. He is the janitor at Planet Express, a man of few words and even fewer concerns about anything happening around him. He’s appeared throughout the show’s run from 1999 onward and is famous for being completely present yet completely indifferent to every crisis, revelation, and emotional moment the main characters experience.

Scruffy is known for referring to himself in the third person — simply “Scruffy” — and for his iconic response when told the company may be going under during a crisis: reading his magazine, he says “Scruffy’s second.” His complete indifference to events occurring around him is the character’s defining trait, and staying in character at a party means responding to everything with the same unhurried, unimpressed calm while maintaining eye contact with nothing in particular.

Yes — Scruffy is an excellent addition to any Futurama group because his look is completely distinct from every other character in the show. The green work uniform and push broom stand out clearly against Fry’s red jacket, Leela’s white tank, or Zapp’s crimson uniform. He also provides the perfect excuse to hang slightly back from the group photo and look at the camera with total indifference, which is both in character and genuinely funny.

Scruffy’s mustache is thick, grey, and drooping — a classic walrus style. Apply a fake grey mustache with spirit gum or skin-safe adhesive centered above the upper lip, pressing firmly for 30 seconds. The mustache should be full and bushy rather than thin or neatly trimmed. Scruffy’s grooming philosophy is clearly functional over decorative, and the mustache should look accordingly lived-in.

Scruffy’s signature prop is a push broom — it appears in nearly every scene he’s in. A full-size push broom is the most recognizable option for photos but genuinely impractical to carry all evening. Use it for posed photos and lean it against a wall the rest of the time. The tool belt worn around the waist adds immediate janitor authenticity without requiring you to carry anything, which is the more sustainable approach for a long Halloween night.
