Quick Answer: The DIY NeeDoh costume is a cardboard box covered in black poster board, with big NEE DOH foam letters and neon tape.
  • Large Moving Box (essential)
  • Black Poster Board Sheets (essential)
  • Purple and Orange Foam Sheets
  • Neon Duck Tape Rolls

NeeDoh is the squishy stress toy, and this costume turns you into a giant cube version of it. The black box and the big purple and orange letters do all the work, and I think that is why it is so easy to build. The toy came out in 2017 as the Groovy Glob (Wikipedia), and people under 30 will read the costume fast. Everyone else will see a box with words on it.

  • 1 Orange Foam SheetsThese make the DOH letters. The pack has 25 sheets of 9 by 12 inch foam, which is far more than six letters need. Foam cuts cleaner than paper and stays flat.

  • 2 Black Poster Board Sheets (essential)This covers the box. The sheets are 11 by 14 inches and come 10 to a pack, which will not cover a big box. I would buy two packs, or trim the box down first.

  • 3 Purple Foam SheetsThese make the NEE letters. The pack has 10 sheets of 9 by 12 inch foam, plenty for three letters. Keep the extras for fixes.

  • 4 Neon Duck Tape RollsThe pack has four rolls in mixed neon colors. You only need a few strips for the head opening, so there is plenty left.

  • 5 Large Moving Box (essential)This is a 24 inch cube moving box, sold in a pack of four. That is big, so check it against your shoulders and height before you cut. Trim it so it ends near your hips, and use the extra boxes to practice the cuts.

How to Make the DIY NeeDoh Costume

You also need scissors, a box cutter, a marker, clear tape, and glue. I would bet your home has all five.

Cutting a head opening and a round arm hole in a plain cardboard box with a box cutter for the DIY NeeDoh costume

Step 1: Cut the openings

Set the box on a table and mark a head hole on the top and an arm hole on each side. Cut them with a box cutter. I always cut the holes a little smaller than I think I need, because you can widen a hole later but you cannot glue cardboard back. Trim the height too, so the box ends near your hips.

Step 2: Cover the box in black poster board

Tape the black sheets on one at a time. Fold the paper around the edges and the arm holes so no brown shows, and overlap the sheets by about a thumb width. The seams are the part I would fuss over, since a gap shows brown from across the room.

Step 3: Draw and cut the letters

Draw NEE on the purple foam and DOH on the orange foam with a marker. Make the letters fat and round, like the toy logo. Cut them out and keep the scraps, because one letter always needs a fix.

Step 4: Glue the letters on

Place the letters dry on the box first, with NEE on top and DOH below. When the spacing looks right, glue each one down and press it for a few seconds. Then do the back side the same way.

Step 5: Add the neon tape

Lay strips of neon duck tape around the head opening in layers, one color on top of the next. Cut each strip to length first, since sticky tape on a curve is hard to fix.

Step 6: Put it on and check

Lift the box over your head and put your arms through the side holes. Then check both sides in a mirror. The letters are on the front and the back, so you read as a NeeDoh from any angle.

How to Wear the DIY NeeDoh Costume

People read the lettering before anything else, so keep it big and clean. Crooked or small letters turn the box into a moving crate. If the black poster board wrinkles or brown cardboard shows through, you look like a box with stickers instead of a toy. Wear a dark top and plain jeans, because anything bright competes with the letters.

A guest reaches out to squish the box and finds cardboard. Everyone does this, because squeezing a NeeDoh is the whole point of a NeeDoh. Have a line ready, and offer your shoulder instead of the box.

You cannot sit down

A box around your waist blocks most chairs. Plan to stand, or build the box shorter so it ends above your lap.

Edges lift in a crowd

Paper edges peel after a night of bumping into doorways and people. I would ask a friend to carry a small roll of clear tape for quick fixes.

DIY NeeDoh Costume Group Ideas

Group Idea: NeeDoh Colors

Blue, Pink and Purple NeeDoh Cubes

Strong group idea if each person builds a box in a different color. The real Nice Cube comes in those three colors, so a row of boxes looks like a shelf at a toy store. Everyone needs the same box size, or the row looks uneven.

Duo Idea: Viral Toys

NeeDoh & Labubu

Might work, but the two share nothing except being viral toys. One is a box and the other is a fuzzy monster, so the pair only makes sense to people who follow toy trends.

DIY NeeDoh Costume: FAQ

Cover a large cardboard box in black poster board, then glue purple NEE and orange DOH foam letters on the front and back. Add neon duck tape around the head opening, cut a head hole and two arm holes, and wear it over a dark top and jeans.

Yes, with a younger crowd. NeeDoh went viral on TikTok in late 2025 and into 2026 (Wikipedia), so people under 30 will get it fast. Older guests may just see a box with words on it.

It is a squeezable toy filled with a dough-like compound that returns to its shape after you squish it. Schylling introduced it in 2017 as the round Groovy Glob.

The Nice Cube is the square version. It is about 2.25 inches wide and comes in blue, pink, or purple (Schylling). The box in this costume copies that cube shape.

I would pick one wide enough to fit over my shoulders with room for my arms, and short enough to end around my hips. The 24 inch box in the materials list is a good start, but trim the height. A box that is too tight pinches when you move, and one that is too tall blocks every chair.

Plan on an evening. Covering the box and cutting the letters take the longest, and the glue needs time to dry before you wear it.

Not easily. A box around the waist blocks most chairs, so I would plan to stand or take the box off. I would make it shorter if I wanted to sit.
