The Fans: Hold Them Right All Night

The folding fans are the single most recognisable element of the Kitana costume and the prop that communicates the character from across a room. Carry both fans at all times throughout the cosplay event. The most in-character poses are the guard stance, where the fans are held flat and closed against the forearms in a defensive position, and the open fan pose, where both fans are spread wide and held at shoulder height. Practice opening and closing the fans smoothly before the event. In group photos, open the fans fully and angle them outward for the widest visual spread. Avoid setting the fans down on surfaces, as they can be damaged or misplaced at busy events.

Keeping the Blue Consistent Across All Pieces

One of the most common challenges in building the Kitana Mortal Kombat costume is matching the shade of blue across multiple separately purchased items. The costume set, the base yoga layer, the rhinestone mask, the self adhesive bandage, and the boots will each come from different sources and may vary slightly in hue. Before the event, lay all pieces out together in natural light and identify any items that read too light, too dark, or too purple against the others. The rhinestone mask and the costume set are the two most visible pieces and should be the colour reference point. The base layer and bandage will largely be covered, so slight variation there is acceptable. If any piece reads significantly off-colour, a light spray of blue fabric dye or metallic paint can bring outliers in line.

Keeping the Wig and Forehead Piece Secure

The Kitana forehead mask piece and the Chinese wig need to stay aligned and secure throughout a full cosplay event. Start by putting on the wig and securing it with wig pins at both temples and the crown. Once the wig is locked in place, position the forehead piece centrally along the hairline and press the adhesive or securing clips firmly into the wig cap. Run a finger along both edges to confirm the piece is flat and level. Avoid tilting your head forward sharply throughout the event, as this is the most common cause of the forehead piece shifting. If the piece loosens mid-event, a small amount of spirit gum or costume adhesive applied to the underside will hold it flat for the remainder of the night.

Kitana Makeup Under the Mask

Because the blue rhinestone mask covers the lower half of the face, the most important makeup focus for the Kitana costume is the eye area. Apply a full contour base, then concentrate on building a dramatic eye look with a smoky liner, deep shadow, and bold false lashes. The eyes are the only visible facial feature while the mask is on, so they carry the entire character read from the front. Use a long-wearing, waterproof formula for all eye products, as the mask can trap warmth and moisture against the face over a long event. A strong brow line, defined and slightly extended at the outer edge, adds to the fierce and regal quality of the Kitana cosplay without competing with the rhinestone mask below it.
