Rick Sanchez, also known as Rick C-137, is one of the two main protagonists of Rick and Morty.

He is a particularly brilliant scientist whose alcoholism and ruthless, nihilistic behavior are a cause for concern for his daughter's family and the safety of their son Morty.
Rick is a tall, lanky old man. He has long legs and arms and is very thin. He has a lightly tanned, ash-colored complexion and gray-blue hair with a bald patch on the back of his head. He has spiky blue hair on his head and a solid-colored eyebrow. His face is wrinkled, he has bags under his eyelids and a pressure crease above his college brow that follows his position, and laugh lines on either side of his mouth. He wears a white lab coat with a light blue undershirt underneath. He also wears brown trousers, a dark brown belt with a yellow buckle, and black shoes. Occasionally he can be seen with a green mark on his mouth, which mainly shows up when he's drunk or when he rarely vomits. Rick speaks lengthy, stuttering, often interrupted by burping and gagging, mostly out of drunkenness.

Rick is a brilliant scientist capable of creating complex scientific inventions including brain-enhancing helmets, dream-piercing devices, portals into different dimensions, various energy weapons and force fields, and the world's first amusement park in the body of a living human. His brilliance can be messed up by his jaded personal views and alcoholic tendencies. Rick gets bored easily and cannot cope with the routine. When his Curse Removal store began to require real work on the episode "Something Ricked This Way Comes," Rick simply lit the entire store and left. He regularly goes to other dimensions to harvest resources and often willingly kills aliens to get them. He is ready to be extremely brutal when people cheat on him or when his life or loved ones are in danger. He is usually portrayed as murderous and has a great disregard for life such that when drunk he almost bombarded the world with neutrinos. It was shown that he liked to kill during the purge and was even willing to kill Morty's half-Gazorp son, as the child was dangerous to everyone and the nature was unstable.

However, this does not make him completely heartless, as he will be shocked, scared, or upset at the loss of human life that he deems unnecessary, foolish, or unreasonable. He was upset with Morty for leaving Fart alive, which resulted in a local police chase that killed many bystanders. He also panicked when Unity destroyed an entire city that Rick believed was inhabited, as he wasn't sure if Summer and Morty were there or not. He was also shocked and angry about people he was close to or about to die, for example when Mr. Poopybutthole was shot and he ran to his side in fear for his life. When Bird Person was killed by Tammy, Rick becomes enraged and mows down several Federation forces. In Interdimensional Cable 2: Tempting Fate, Rick gasps when he sees Jerry shot and mutilated multiple times. During the festival, he only watched the murder a few seconds before he was overwhelmed by the violence and vomiting. Later, when he helped Arthricia get revenge on the upper class, he felt he had killed enough and found it unfounded. In the past, Rick was a "hero" like Space Beth, but eventually stopped and considered it a "phase".
