Halloween Costume Guide
Alexei is a Russian scientist who defects, falls in love with American Slurpees and carnival games, and dies not long after winning the biggest stuffed Woody Woodpecker at the fair. The plush toy is what actually makes this costume recognizable, without it he’s just a guy in a plain shirt and glasses. Dr. Alexei is played by Alec Utgoff in Stranger Things season 3 (Wikipedia), and became a fan favorite despite fairly limited screen time.

The Woody Woodpecker plush is the entire joke, without it you’re just a man in a plain shirt and glasses at a party. Keep the clothes muted and slightly rumpled rather than sharp, Alexei never looks like he’s trying to make a fashion statement. At a crowded party, if the plush toy gets set down somewhere and forgotten, the whole reference disappears with it.
Alexei approaches ordinary American things, carnival games, cherry Slurpees, with a kind of wide-eyed delight that never reads as performative. He’s fussy about small details, like getting the exact flavor he asked for, in a way that makes him instantly likable rather than annoying.
Bring the plush toy somewhere you won’t lose track of it
A stuffed animal is easy to set down at a party and forget in a corner. Keep it tucked under one arm or attached to a bag strap so it stays with you all night.
Don’t overdo the accent
A heavy, exaggerated accent reads as a caricature rather than the character. A light touch, or skipping it entirely, works better than committing to an impression you can’t sustain all night.
Duo Idea
Excellent duo, this is the odd-couple pairing that gives Alexei most of his best scenes in the season. The contrast between Murray’s paranoid intensity and Alexei’s wide-eyed delight reads well even without props.
Group Idea: Russian Base Trio
Strong group for fans of the season, this covers the trio who infiltrate the Russian base together. Hopper and Joyce would need to be built from scratch since neither has a dedicated guide here, but the story connection is real and well known.
Duo Idea
Might work, but their connection runs through a tangled double-agent storyline rather than a straightforward friendship, so this pairing needs some explanation to land. It only really clicks for people who remember the specifics of that plot.
Group Idea: Starcourt Mall
Might work, but this leans on a fairly deep-cut corner of Season 3’s plot that casual viewers may not place right away. It works best for a group that’s rewatched the season closely enough to remember the base beneath the mall.
The plush toy is worth buying, everything else is common closet items.
Alexei is warm, curious, and a little particular about getting exactly what he asked for.
Wear the cream long sleeve shirt over a white crew neck tee with classic cut trousers and a black leather belt, add vintage eyeglasses and a brown watch, then finish with black oxford shoes. Carry a Woody Woodpecker plush for the one detail that makes it unmistakably him.
Niche. He’s a Stranger Things 3 character with a small handful of scenes, not one of the show’s leads, so recognition depends entirely on how well someone remembers that specific season. The Woody Woodpecker plush is what actually jogs people’s memory.
“Tell that stupid man it is not the same in the slightest, and I would like the cherry I requested” is his most quoted line, delivered to Murray about his Slurpee order. It captures his whole fussy, endearing energy in one sentence.

He’s a Russian scientist who defects and helps Hopper, Joyce, and Murray, growing genuinely fond of American life along the way, especially Slurpees and carnival games. He’s killed by Russian soldiers at the Hawkins Fun Fair not long after winning his Woody Woodpecker plush.
