Wet Bandits (Harry & Marv) Halloween Costume Guide

Two guys, one crowbar each, and a house that fights back.
BurglarChristmasComedycriminalVillain
🧤
Quick Answer: Marv and Harry work as separate builds you can wear together or apart.
  • Marv Cardigan & Jacket Combo (essential)
  • Marv Curly Wig (essential)
  • Harry Grey Wool Overcoat (essential)
  • Harry Black Beanie
  • Harry Red Acrylic Marker (doorknob scar)

Harry and Marv spend one night trying to rob a house and getting mangled by booby traps instead, so the actual burglary barely happens on screen. Marv’s cardigan jacket combo and wild wig do the recognition work for him, while Harry’s grey overcoat, black beanie, and the red marker burn scar on his hand do it for the other one. Marv’s habit of clogging sinks and leaving the water running in every house they rob is what gives the pair their nickname in the first place. Home Alone (1990) was directed by Chris Columbus and written by John Hughes (Wikipedia), and it still airs constantly every December, so most people at a Christmas party will get the reference without an explanation.

Marv Wet Bandits Home Alone
  • 1 Marv Cardigan & Jacket Combo (essential)This is the one purchase that makes Marv work. It layers the brown jacket over the cardigan in a single piece, so you get his exact color mix without hunting down two coats that match. Skip it and you are just a guy in brown, not the guy who floods basements for fun.

  • 2 Grey Henley T-ShirtWorn under the jacket combo and visible at the collar. Any plain grey henley from your own closet works fine here.

  • 3 Black JeansStandard black jeans. Check your closet first.

  • 4 Crowbar PropMarv carries this through most of the film, and it is the prop that tells people “burglar” before you say a word. Keep it in your hand instead of hanging it from a belt loop, or people will assume you are a contractor.

  • 5 Short Sleeve White T-ShirtWorn as the underlayer beneath the henley. Any plain white tee works.

  • 6 Black Slip-on LoafersSimple black slip-ons. Most people already have a pair close enough.

  • 7 Short Curly Wig (essential)Without this wig, the costume reads as a brown jacket and nothing else. The wig is what turns a stranger’s face into Marv’s face. Do not brush it out or style it neat. The more it looks like he slept in a gutter, the more accurate it is.

  • 8 Fingerless GlovesMarv wears these the entire film while handling the crowbar. Any dark fingerless knit gloves get the job done.

  • 1 Grey Wool Overcoat (essential)This coat is Harry’s whole silhouette. It is heavy, structured, and worn buttoned most of the way, which is exactly the look of a man trying to seem more in control than he is. Buy this one specifically. A thin or light colored coat will not read as Harry from ten feet away.

  • 2 Brown Knit VestWorn under the overcoat, over the corduroy shirt. It should peek out at the collar along with the shirt underneath it.

  • 3 Khaki Corduroy ShirtThe base layer of the three layer look. Any tan or khaki corduroy button-up works.

  • 4 Grey Fingerless GlovesGrey, not black. It is a small detail, but it is the one that separates Harry’s gloves from Marv’s on sight.
    See on Amazon
  • 5 Black BeaniePull it low, over the ears. This is the fastest way to signal Harry from across a room, even before anyone sees the coat.

  • 6 Grey JeansGrey rather than black. Check your closet, you probably own a pair close enough.
    See on Amazon
  • 7 Grey Knit ScarfLoop it loosely under the coat collar. Skip it if the room runs warm, nobody will notice.

  • 8 White FeathersThese are not from the first movie. They are a nod to the pigeon scene in Home Alone 2, and sticking a few to the beanie and shoulders rewards anyone who has seen both films. Skip it if you only care about the first one.
    See on Amazon
  • 9 Red Acrylic MarkerDraw a small M on the back of your right hand before you put your gloves on. It is the detail people who know the film will actually stop and point at. Draw it after the gloves go on and you have wasted the whole gag.

  • 10 Crowbar PropSame prop as Marv’s. If you are only buying one for the pair, hand it to Harry. His whole personality is barking orders while holding something threatening.

  • 11 Black Dress ShoesFormal black oxfords. Fits the overdressed burglar bit better than sneakers would.

How to Style the Wet Bandits Costume

The wig is the first thing people notice on Marv, and if it is combed flat or too clean, the whole costume reads as a normal brown jacket instead of a criminal having a bad night. Harry’s coat does the same job for him, but only if it stays buttoned and heavy looking instead of hanging open like a normal jacket. At a party where the lighting is dim, the black beanie carries more of Harry’s identity than the coat does. If either wig or beanie comes off for more than a few minutes, you are back to being two guys in coats.

Marv screams “We’re the Wet Bandits, W-E-T” at a cop who has clearly stopped listening, proud of a nickname that is basically a confession. Harry, meanwhile, spends the whole night explaining to Marv exactly why every plan is failing, which is its own kind of comedy since none of his plans work either. Lean into that dynamic instead of just standing next to each other in costume.

The wig gets hot fast

A synthetic curly wig traps heat, and if the party has any dancing involved, you will be sweating under it within the hour. Bring bobby pins so it does not slide when it inevitably starts moving. That is the tradeoff for the one item that actually makes the costume work.

Test the marker before the party

Some red acrylic markers smear on skin contact within an hour, which means your doorknob scar disappears before anyone asks about it. Test it on your hand a day early and let it dry fully before you leave the house. If you are also doing the feather detail, use spirit gum, not tape. Tape falls off the second you take your coat off.

Wet Bandits Group Halloween Costume Ideas

Group Idea: Classic Trio

Wet Bandits & Kevin McCallister

Excellent trio if you can get a third person on board. Kevin is the reason Harry and Marv spend the whole film in pain, so the dynamic explains itself the second all three of you are standing together. Give Kevin a BB gun prop and let him point it at the other two all night.

Group Idea: Extended Home Alone Cast

Wet Bandits, Kate McCallister, Old Man Marley & Pigeon Lady

Strong if you actually have four or five people willing to commit, since the jokes depend on everyone staying in character at once. Kate McCallister and Old Man Marley need someone who has read the script closely enough to play it straight, and Pigeon Lady works best if she stays quiet near a pile of birdseed instead of trying to explain herself.

Group Idea: Christmas Movie Villains

Wet Bandits, The Grinch & Bad Santa

Might work, but the tone across this group swings wildly. The Grinch is a green monster, Bad Santa is a drunk in a red suit, and Harry and Marv are two guys in coats who keep getting hurt. The Christmas thread holds it together on paper more than it does in a photo.

Group Idea: Other Bumbling Criminal Duos

Wet Bandits & Another Villain Pair

Might work, but only if the other duo is just as recognizable on its own, since nobody is going to connect two random burglar costumes without help. Pick a pair people already know as a team, not two separate criminals from different movies stapled together.

Wet Bandits Halloween Costume DIY Tips

Building the Look

Most of this build already lives in your closet or a thrift store. The wig and the cardigan jacket combo are the only two items worth buying specifically for accuracy.

  • Grey henley, black jeans, white tee, black loafers: check your closet first.
  • Cardigan jacket combo: buy this one. It is the shortcut that saves you from hunting two separate coats.
  • Curly wig: buy this too. Skip it and Marv stops being Marv.
  • Grey wool overcoat: buy this. A thin coat will not hold the silhouette.
  • Corduroy shirt, knit vest, grey jeans, scarf: thrift stores usually have all four.
  • Black beanie: cheap, buy new, pull it low.
  • Red acrylic marker: a few dollars. Test it before the party.
  • White feathers: skip it if you only care about the first movie.
  • Crowbar prop: one is enough for the pair if you are on a budget.

Playing Harry & Marv at the Party

Harry barks orders like he is still in charge of anything. Marv agrees enthusiastically and then does the wrong thing anyway. Neither of them notices the pattern.

  • When someone asks who clogged the sink, blame the other one.
  • Marv’s line to use: “All the houses on the block are hit. We’re the Wet Bandits. W-E-T.” Say it like it is a good idea.
  • Harry’s line: “Why the hell did you take your shoes off?” Full volume, the second Marv complains about anything.
  • The crowbar battle cry, “Crowbars up!”, works as a toast if someone hands you a drink instead.
  • If someone points out you got burned, hurt, or humiliated all night, the correct answer is that it was Kevin’s fault.

Wet Bandits Halloween Costume: FAQ

Marv needs the brown cardigan jacket combo and the curly wig. Harry needs the grey wool overcoat, black beanie, and a red marker for the doorknob scar on his hand. Everything else is common wardrobe you likely already own.

Yes, and it does not need explaining. Home Alone airs on cable and streaming every December, and Harry and Marv are two of the most recognized burglars in Christmas movie history. This is not a costume that fades, it just does not come up outside of Christmas season.

Marv’s proudest moment is admitting to the cops, “All the houses on the block are hit. We’re the Wet Bandits. W-E-T,” not realizing he just confessed. Harry snaps at him mid heist with, “Why the hell did you take your shoes off? Because the room was full of tacks! Don’t you wish you had your shoes on now?!” Before stepping into Kevin’s house, the two share their battle cry: “Crowbars up!”

Harry Lime is played by Joe Pesci and Marv Murchins is played by Daniel Stern. Pesci won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor the same year Home Alone came out, for a different film entirely (IMDb).

Yes. Marv works on his own if you commit to the wig, and Harry works on his own if you commit to the coat and beanie. Together they read stronger, but neither one needs the other to be recognized.

In the movie, Kevin heats a doorknob until it is red hot, and it burns an M shape into Harry’s hand when he grabs it. Drawing that M on the back of your hand with a red marker is a five second detail that gets more reaction than the coat does.

They are not from the first movie. In Home Alone 2, Harry gets covered in birdseed and attacked by pigeons in Central Park. The feathers are a reference to that scene, so skip them if you are only doing the first film.
