Halloween Costume Guide
Six pieces, one mask that does the recognition work, and the eternal question of whether you really want to go to this party in the first place.
Morty Smith is a 14-year-old who gets pulled into interdimensional misadventures by his grandfather Rick on a near-daily basis, mostly against his will. He attends Harry Herpson High School when he is not accidentally contributing to the extinction of entire civilizations. He started the series as an anxious sidekick and has slowly grown into someone capable of holding his own, though he still says “aw, man” more than any other character on television.

The mask is what people read first, so get it seated correctly before you walk in. A Morty mask that has slid sideways or is sitting too high on your head looks like a mask that doesn’t fit, not a character. Adjust it, check it in a mirror, and accept that you will need to adjust it again at some point during the night. Mask hair is a real problem and there is no elegant solution.
Morty is perpetually on the edge of a breakdown about something, usually something Rick has caused. At a party, this translates to looking mildly overwhelmed regardless of what is happening around you. When someone asks how you are doing, say “aw, man” and trail off. When Rick does something at the party, look at them the way Morty looks at every single one of Rick’s decisions โ which is a specific expression that combines concern, disbelief, and the resignation of someone who already knows this is going to end badly.
The Mask Over Glasses Problem
If you wear glasses, test the mask before you buy it. Most full-face Halloween masks do not accommodate glasses underneath, and the Morty mask is no exception. Contacts for the night is the clean solution. If that is not an option, look for a Morty mask with enough interior depth to fit your frames, or consider a half-mask version and commit to the yellow shirt doing more work.
The Rick Problem
Morty is a significantly more recognizable costume when there is a Rick next to you. Solo, the mask carries the recognition. Paired, the dynamic carries itself โ and the dynamic is funnier in person than either costume is individually. If you are going with a group and anyone is willing to be Rick, let them. You will spend less of the night explaining who you are.
The Smith Family Science Adventures
The strongest option here. Every character has a distinct look and a distinct personality, and the group dynamic is already written for you โ just show up and be your character. The more Smith family members you have, the better it reads. Jerry is the most fun to play and the hardest to volunteer for. Mr. Poopybutthole is the wildcard that rewards people who know the show deeply.
Anxious Sidekicks Across Dimensions
A concept that works well because every character here is broadly recognized and the theme explains itself the moment someone asks. Chewbacca and Samwise are the visual anchors. Robin and Luigi will land for most people. Watson is the hardest build and depends heavily on which adaptation you go with. The concept is better if you can commit to the anxious sidekick energy as a group rather than just wearing the costumes.
Nervous Wrecks Club
A niche concept that only fully lands with the right crowd. Charlie Brown and Piglet are universally recognized. Tina Belcher from Bob’s Burgers will land for anyone who watches adult animation. Milhouse and Courage are more specific. This group works best at a party with animation fans who will appreciate the theme โ at a general Halloween party, it is five unrelated costumes standing near Morty.
The mask is the one item you need to source. Everything else has a reasonable chance of already being in your wardrobe or easily substituted. Morty’s outfit is intentionally plain โ that is the whole point of the character.
Morty is easy to play because his default state is mild distress. He reacts to things rather than initiates them. At a party, this means you spend most of the night responding to what is happening around you with varying degrees of “aw, man.”
Six pieces: yellow crewneck tee, Morty mask, navy blue casual pants, foam laser gun prop, white crew socks, and white sneakers. The mask and the yellow shirt are the two essential pieces. The mask is what separates the costume from a person in a yellow shirt. Check your closet before you buy anything โ the shirt, pants, socks, and sneakers are all common enough that you may already own them.
Three lines that cover his full emotional range, which is narrower than you might expect:
Rick and Morty has been running since 2013 and is now in Season 8, with the fanbase still active. The yellow shirt and round mask combination is one of the more recognized looks in adult animation. Paired with a Rick, the costume reads immediately. Solo, the mask still carries enough recognition that most people who watch the show will place it.
Morty Smith is one of the two main characters of Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty. He is 14 years old, attends Harry Herpson High School, and spends most of the series being pulled into interdimensional adventures he did not consent to. He started as an anxious, easily manipulated sidekick and has grown across eight seasons into someone who can hold his own โ though the anxiety never fully went away. He is, according to Rick, the Morty-est Morty.
The mask is necessary. A yellow shirt without it is a yellow shirt. Morty’s round face and helmet-shaped brown hair are the most recognizable things about the character visually. Without the mask, the costume only works if you are standing next to a very obvious Rick who is doing all the recognition work.
Rick is more comfortable for a long night and plays better solo โ the lab coat and wig are practical, the portal gun is a prop people will engage with, and the character’s attitude carries the whole event. Morty is a better paired costume. If you are going with someone who is willing to be Rick, Morty is the right call. If you are going alone, Rick is easier.
A foam laser gun. Morty uses various sci-fi weapons throughout the show, and the foam laser gun is the most practical and widely available option. It is not the portal gun โ that belongs to Rick. If you are doing a paired costume, keep the props separate. Rick gets the portal gun, Morty gets the laser gun. The hierarchy matters.
