Halloween Costume Guide
Seven pieces to recreate Chris Pratt’s Halloween 2022 Rip Wheeler look. The hat and sunglasses do most of the work.
Rip Wheeler manages the Dutton ranch on Yellowstone and handles problems that other people do not want to know about. Chris Pratt wore the look for Halloween 2022 in a specific combination that became a widely shared photo reference. The recognition level depends entirely on your crowd. Yellowstone fans will get it immediately. Everyone else will see a cowboy costume, which is not the worst fallback.

The hat and sunglasses are what people read first, and they need to be on together. A cowboy hat without dark sunglasses at a Halloween party reads as a generic western costume. Sunglasses without the hat is just a person wearing sunglasses inside. The combination is what pulls you specifically into Rip Wheeler territory. If the hat shifts backward over the course of the night and the sunglasses come off, the costume quietly falls apart without you noticing.
Rip Wheeler does not talk much and he does not explain himself. At a party, lean into that. Short answers. Slow nods. If someone asks who you are, look at them for a beat longer than necessary before you say it. He is not performing for anyone. He is just there, doing the job, and the job tonight is standing near the snack table looking like someone you should not push.
The Hat Angle Problem
Pin the hat with a bobby pin or two through the band before you leave the house. A cowboy hat that sits too far back on your head reads as cartoon cowboy. One that sits straight forward and slightly low reads as Rip Wheeler. The difference is about two inches and one pin. Fix it at home, not in a bathroom mirror at 11pm.
Wearing Sunglasses Indoors All Night
Dark aviators indoors will have you squinting at people and missing faces by the end of the night. Rip Wheeler would not care. You might. Keep them on for photos and the first hour, then decide. The hat carries the costume if the sunglasses come off. The reverse is not true.
The Dutton Ranch Crew
This is the strongest option if your whole group watches Yellowstone. The characters are visually distinct enough that you are not all wearing the same hat, and the dynamic between them is funny to play with at a party. The weak point is anyone outside your group who has not seen the show. To them, this is four people in western wear who seem to know each other very well.
Cinematic Cowboys
This works because each costume is visually different and each character is recognized on their own terms. Woody is immediately readable. Arthur Morgan requires some effort on the builder’s part but lands well with gamers. Lucky Luke is a genuine wildcard. Half the room will love it and the other half will ask if you are the Lone Ranger. I would call this conditional, not strong, because of how unevenly the recognition spreads across the group.
The Pratt Cinematic Universe
Same-actor groups only work if people know the actor well enough to connect the characters. Chris Pratt is famous enough that this lands, but you will spend a lot of the night explaining it to anyone who does not immediately make the connection. This is a good group for a crowd full of Marvel fans and Parks and Rec people. Not a great group for a mixed party where you want strangers to get it without a setup.
The Iconic Chrises
This is a niche concept with an uneven recognition spread. Christopher Moltisanti and Chris Traeger will land for anyone who has seen The Sopranos or Parks and Rec. Chris Redfield needs a committed Resident Evil build to read clearly. The theme itself requires explanation to most people, which defeats a lot of the fun. This is the kind of group that your inner circle will love and everyone else will find confusing.
Rugged Animal Wranglers
Niche. The theme is a loose one, and the connection between these four is more of a concept than something that reads at a glance. Indiana Jones and Steve Irwin are universally recognized. Joe Exotic is still recognized but the Tiger King moment has passed. Rip Wheeler fits thematically but the overall group does not announce itself the way a strong group costume does. This one works best if your group already knows the joke and does not need strangers to get it.

Most of this costume is basic clothing. The specialty items are the hat, the boots, and the belt buckle. Everything else has a decent chance of already being in your closet.
Rip Wheeler is not a talker. He does not explain himself. The character works at a party because it requires almost nothing from you, and silence reads well when you are dressed for it.
Seven items: aviator sunglasses, wide-brim black cowboy hat, trucker jacket, slim ash jeans, black dress shirt, eagle buckle leather belt, and cowboy boots. The hat and sunglasses are the two essential pieces. Without both on at the same time, the costume does not read as Rip Wheeler from any distance.
Rip Wheeler is not a character who gives speeches. His most quoted lines are short and flat:
Deliver any of these once, quietly, to one specific person. That is the whole character in three seconds.
Yellowstone’s peak cultural moment was 2021 to 2023, and the show’s dominance has cooled since then. Most adults will still recognize the look, especially the hat-and-sunglasses combination, but the immediate “oh, you’re Rip Wheeler” reaction is less certain than it was two years ago. If your crowd watches the show, you’re fine. If not, the costume reads as a generic cowboy, which is not necessarily a bad fallback.
The hat and sunglasses are non-negotiable. The trucker jacket and boots add the most after those two. The belt buckle is a detail fans will notice. The jeans and shirt are basics you likely already own. If you are cutting costs, hat plus sunglasses plus jacket gets you most of the way there.
Chris Pratt posted photos of himself dressed as Rip Wheeler for Halloween 2022 in a specific combination: black cowboy hat, dark aviators, black denim trucker jacket, gold eagle belt buckle, and blue jeans. That photo spread widely and became the reference point for the costume. You are recreating that Halloween photo, not just building a general Yellowstone look.
Yes. The hat, sunglasses, trucker jacket, and boots translate without any changes. Swap the slim jeans for whatever fit works for you. The core look reads the same regardless.
A large gold or silver American eagle design buckle is the most accurate to both the character and the Pratt Halloween photos. A plain western buckle works if you already own one. The eagle detail is what reads as intentional rather than just a belt you happened to wear.
Rip Wheeler is a main character in the Paramount Network series Yellowstone, played by Cole Hauser. He manages the Dutton ranch and serves as its enforcer, handling problems quietly and permanently. Chris Pratt, who had no role in the show, dressed as Rip Wheeler for Halloween 2022. The photos circulated widely and turned the look into a recognizable celebrity costume reference.
