Halloween Costume Idea For Men
Peter Quill was abducted from Earth as a kid, raised by space pirates, and eventually put together the Guardians of the Galaxy almost by accident. He plays it up as a legendary outlaw; most people in the room have no idea who he is, which is the joke built into the character. Chris Pratt has played him across five MCU films since Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014, and the red jacket over the mask is the silhouette people recognize even if they haven’t seen every movie (Marvel Cinematic Universe Wiki).

The red jacket is what people notice first, and it needs to actually be red, not maroon or burgundy, or the whole costume drifts toward “guy in a leather jacket” instead of Star-Lord. The mask adds recognition but costs you your face for the night, so decide before the party whether you’d rather be identifiable in photos or identifiable in conversation. A dim, crowded room is where a jacket that’s too brown or too dark falls apart fastest, since the color is doing most of the identification work from across the room.
Quill introduces himself to a room full of strangers as “Star-Lord, man. Legendary outlaw,” and gets nothing but confused stares back. He says it again anyway. That’s the whole character in one exchange.
Pick jacket or trench coat, not both
Layering the trench coat over the jacket adds bulk without adding recognition, since the jacket underneath is already the identifying piece. Wear one as your outer layer and skip the other.
The blaster prop needs a place to go
It’s too big to hold for hours and too easy to leave on a table if you don’t have a holster or strap. Decide where it lives when you’re not posing for a photo before you get to the party.
Couples Idea
Excellent pairing and the central will-they-won’t-they of the Guardians films. The red jacket against Gamora’s green skin and armor is a strong color contrast that reads instantly, even to people who haven’t seen the movies.
Duo Idea
Strong duo if your partner is willing to commit to Rocket’s makeup and prosthetics, which is a much bigger ask than the red jacket. Skip this one if the other person just wants to throw on ears and call it done, the size and species contrast is the whole point.
Group Idea: Guardians of the Galaxy
Excellent group and one of the most recognizable ensemble casts in the MCU. Every character has a distinct silhouette, so there’s no risk of anyone blending into anyone else. The tradeoff is that Groot and Drax both need real prosthetic or paint work, this isn’t a group that works with thrown-together looks.
Group Idea: Wisecracking Space Heroes
Might work, but this one only holds together if everyone at the party has broad enough pop culture knowledge to place all four franchises at once. Individually each character is well known, together the theme needs a little explaining before it clicks.
The jacket and mask are the two items worth buying specifically for this. Everything else has a reasonable substitute.
Quill oversells himself constantly and mostly gets confused looks back. That gap between how he thinks he lands and how he actually lands is the character.
Start with the red jacket and the Star-Lord mask, those two items do most of the recognition work. Layer the gray shirt and dark maroon pants underneath, add the brown wig, boots, and belt, then carry the blaster prop.
Yes. Chris Pratt has played Star-Lord across five Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers films since 2014, and the red jacket look is one of the more recognizable superhero silhouettes that isn’t a full bodysuit.
“Star-Lord, man. Legendary outlaw.” He says it after introducing himself and getting blank stares, which is the joke: he thinks the name carries weight and it usually doesn’t.
Chris Pratt plays Peter Quill, Star-Lord, starting with Guardians of the Galaxy (2014).
Peter Jason Quill. He’s half human, half Celestial, the son of Meredith Quill and Ego.
Not strictly, the red jacket alone gets you most of the way. But the mask is what separates a generic space-adventurer look from Star-Lord specifically, especially in photos.
