Celebrity Halloween Costumes
For about a decade her costumes were big but normal: a witch, a vampire, a cat. Around 2011 she started using film makeup artists and full-body prosthetics, and the costumes turned into multi-hour transformations that take months to plan. Below is every year from 2000 to 2025, newest first, including the years there was no party.

Tom as a knight turned to stone
She was Medusa, with a headpiece of moving snakes, fangs and a long snake tail, and she carried a bow and arrow. Prosthetics artist Mike Marino worked on it again. Tom came as a knight turned to stone.
Before the party she told Good Morning America she would be “very scary, but very ugly.” Fair.
Tom went as E.T. too
She and Tom both went as E.T., with 3D-printed suits and large remote-controlled heads. She said it took a year to get ready, and they started getting dressed at 10 a.m. on the day of the party at Hard Rock Hotel New York.
With Cirque du Soleil dancers
She was the body of a peacock, and a group of Cirque du Soleil dancers made up her tail feathers. Tom came as a giant egg.
It needed about 20 hours of rehearsal, which is not something most costumes ask of you.
Her most famous costume
She crawled down the red carpet as a giant, realistic earthworm, and Tom came as the fisherman holding the line. It took about two years to plan.
It is the costume people bring up first when her name comes up in October.
A second short film
The party was canceled again, and she made a sequel. This time she was a zombie mom falling apart at the seams, and her four kids played mummies.
No party, a short film instead
The pandemic canceled the party, so she made a short film. Tom and the kids played zombies hunting for her brain, and she hid around the house in body paint that made her blend into a wood-paneled wall and a marble bed.
The film is listed as Heidi Does Halloween (IMDb), and it started a two-year run of Halloween movies instead of parties.
Her 20th party
For her 20th party she wore a full prosthetic alien with exposed organs and a glowing brain under glass. Makeup artists Mike Fontaine and Mike Marino spent about 10 hours applying it in the window of a Manhattan store, where people outside could watch.
She said the idea came from Tom’s band, Tokio Hotel, because they believe in aliens.
With Tom Kaulitz as Shrek
She went as Fiona in her ogre form, and Tom Kaulitz, her boyfriend at the time and now husband, went as Shrek. Under the full green face she was close to unrecognizable.
With a zombie crew
She went as the werewolf from Michael Jackson’s Thriller video, and her friends came as the zombies from it. If you want the Michael Jackson side of it, our Michael Jackson costume guide has that part.
Five women dressed as her
She wore a simple bodysuit and thigh-high boots, and five other women wore prosthetics and wigs to look exactly like her. The joke was that her costume was being herself, times six.
Cartoon proportions
She went as Jessica Rabbit from Who Framed Roger Rabbit, using makeup to copy the cartoon’s shape. The red sequin dress is easy to find. The proportions are the hard part.
Full-body wings and paint
A giant, colorful butterfly with full-body paint and large wings. It was pretty, which is not a word that fits most of her later costumes.
Aging makeup at 40
She turned 40 that year and showed up as a much older version of herself, with full-body aging makeup. She was born on June 1, 1973 (Wikipedia).
This is the easiest of her big costumes to copy at home. Good aging makeup and a cardigan do most of the work.
No October party
Hurricane Sandy hit New York days before Halloween, and she called off the party. Her Cleopatra costume came out later, and she held a holiday party in December that raised money for the Red Cross.
Two parties in one year
She held two parties that year. For one she was a human body with the skin peeled away, showing painted muscle, wheeled in on a gurney by people dressed as doctors. For the other she and Seal went as apes.
The skinless body is hard to look at, even in photos.
On stilts
A glittery purple and red robot-alien, raised up on stilts. The stilts added a lot of height to someone who is already tall.
Matching Seal
Bird makeup and fishnets, in a look that matched her then-husband Seal.
Her most criticized costume
She dressed as the Hindu goddess Kali, with fake severed body parts as props. The idea came from an assistant. It was widely criticized as disrespectful to Hindus, and it is the one costume on this list worth skipping.
Tail, whiskers and a collar
A plain cat costume. After the snake and apple, it felt like a year off.
Eight months pregnant
She went as both the snake and the apple from the Garden of Eden, while eight months pregnant. One costume, two roles, very little needed.
Giant bat wings
Dramatic makeup, huge bat wings, a tall wig and big fangs. The wings are the first sign of the scale she would go for later.
A bodysuit, gown and headdress in one
A bright red witch with skeleton details, a long gown and a tall headdress.
Hard to name, even at the time
A gold, otherworldly outfit with a fake snake in her hair. Coverage from that year could not agree on whether she was an alien, a robot or a goddess, and it is still hard to say.
A cartoon pin-up
A classic Betty Boop, the cartoon pin-up. It is one of the few years where you could copy her look from a regular costume shop, and our Betty Boop costume guide covers the pieces.
Arrived on a real horse
She rode in on a police horse the NYPD lent her, wearing a glittery white bodysuit with fake blood around her mouth. She has said the horse was calm and she was the scared one.
First party, New York
Her first Halloween party, and the simplest costume she has ever worn: an all-black dominatrix look. She later said she wanted to be “Heidi, but a little bit more S&M.”
