Ted Lasso Halloween Costume Guide

Track Jacket  ·  Fake Mustache  ·  Whistle You’ll Actually Use

Two looks, one rule: the mustache is non-negotiable. Without it, you’re just a cheerful man in sportswear. With it, you’re Ted Lasso.

Quick Answer: The Ted Lasso Halloween costume comes in two looks, both built around one essential item.
  • Fake mustache (essential, both looks)
  • AFC Richmond track jacket or sweater (essential, casual look)
  • Whistle with lanyard
  • Black suit and dotted tie (formal look)
  • Cream chinos and running shoes (casual look)

Ted Lasso coaches an English Premier League soccer club despite knowing very little about soccer. He is relentlessly optimistic, genuinely kind, and has a mustache that has no business being as iconic as it is. The Apple TV+ show ran from 2020 to 2023 and won a pile of Emmys. The costume is one of the more comfortable Halloween options out there because the track jacket version is basically athletic wear with a fake mustache glued to your face. That is the whole thing.

Ted Lasso Halloween Costume Items

Ted has two distinct looks across the show. Pick one based on how formal your party is and how comfortable you want to be. The mustache is mandatory for both.

  • 1 Navy Oxford ShirtThe base layer. Worn under the jacket or sweater, collar visible. Ted is dressed like someone who takes the job seriously even if no one gave him the rulebook. Tucked loosely, not buttoned to the throat.

  • 2 Ted Lasso SweaterIf the track jacket is sold out or you want a warmer option, the sweater is the alternative. It has the AFC Richmond look and reads clearly for anyone who has watched the show.

  • 3 Ted Lasso Track JacketThis is the most recognized piece from the show. People who watched even one episode will place it immediately. Wear it over the Oxford shirt, unzipped enough to show the collar. This is the item that does the most work before the mustache is even mentioned.

  • 4 Cream Chino PantsTed coaches in khakis, not sweatpants. Cream or tan chinos, a clean fit. You probably own something close to this already. Check before ordering.

  • 5 Fake MustacheEssential. Not optional. Not a nice-to-have. Without this, you are a cheerful man at a Halloween party. With this, you are Ted Lasso. Apply with spirit gum, press firmly, and check it in the mirror before you leave. It will shift if you eat or drink a lot, so carry spirit gum remover for the end of the night.

  • 6 Whistle with LanyardWear it around your neck. Use it sparingly and at exactly the right moment. Once or twice all night is funnier than every five minutes. When someone does something good, blow it once and nod. That is the joke.

  • 7 Grey and Black Running ShoesTed coaches in running shoes. Not dress shoes, not boots. Check your closet first. Any clean grey or neutral running shoe works here.

  • 1 2-Piece Black Dress SuitTed wears a black suit for press conferences and formal club events. It is a clean, straightforward suit. The fit should be neat without being too sharp. Ted is not a fashion person; he is a man doing his best in a situation he did not entirely anticipate.

  • 2 White Dress ShirtPlain white, under the suit jacket. Nothing patterned. Ted is wearing this because someone told him it was appropriate, and he trusted them.

  • 3 White Cotton HandkerchiefFold it into the breast pocket. This is a small detail but it finishes the suit look properly. Two folds, visible edge, that’s all.

  • 4 Red and White Dots NecktieThis is the primary tie option for the suit look. The pattern is specific enough to feel intentional without being flashy. Ted picks ties like a man who doesn’t think about ties very much.

  • 5 Black NecktieIf the dotted tie feels like too much, a plain black tie is the safer alternative. Both work with the suit.

  • 6 Black Crew SocksCheck your sock drawer. This is not worth ordering separately unless you genuinely own nothing black.

How to Style the Ted Lasso Halloween Costume

The mustache is what people see first, and it needs to be centered and secure when you walk in. A mustache that has migrated one centimeter to the left by 9pm is not an AFC Richmond coach, it’s a person having a slowly escalating face problem. Apply it at home, press it for a full 30 seconds, and check it from multiple angles in a mirror. The jacket or suit can be slightly off. The mustache cannot be slightly off.

Ted Lasso does not come into a room like he owns it. He comes in like he is genuinely glad the room exists and is happy to meet everyone in it. At a party, that means you ask people questions, you listen to the answers, and when someone does something worth acknowledging, you blow the whistle once and nod. Short sentences, warm delivery, a mild Kansas energy. The character is easy to play because he is not performing confidence. He just has it, quietly, in a way that makes everyone around him slightly confused and ultimately better.

The Mustache Will Move

It will happen around hour two, usually after a drink. Carry a small piece of spirit gum in your pocket and a mirror in your bag or phone camera. Check it every hour. A drifting mustache that goes unnoticed is not a costume problem, it is a conversation that now has to happen with every new person you meet for the rest of the night.

The Whistle Has One Rule

Use it rarely. The whistle is funny exactly twice in the evening. After that it is a noise problem. Pick the two best moments of the night and save it for those. A whistle blown at the right moment, with nothing said afterward, is perfect. Fifteen whistle blows is a headache with a lanyard.

Ted Lasso Group Halloween Costume Ideas

The Richmond FC Coaching Staff

Ted Lasso, Coach Beard, Nate Shelley, Roy Kent, Leslie Higgins

This works for a group that has all watched the show together, which is the exact kind of group that would do this costume. The visual variety is good: Beard needs a beard and a hat, Roy needs to look permanently irritated, Higgins needs a slightly too-large suit and a nervous energy. Anyone who has seen the show will immediately understand the group dynamic and probably quote back at you. For people who haven’t seen it, you’re five people at a party who seem to genuinely enjoy each other, which is its own statement.

The Fish-Out-of-Water Comedy Coaches

Ted Lasso, Coach Gordon Bombay, Coach Klein, Coach Boone, Patches O’Houlihan

This is conditional. It works well for a group where everyone is comfortable with their character and the party crowd knows film and TV. Bombay and Ted are immediately recognizable. Patches O’Houlihan from Dodgeball requires committing to a wheelchair or the joke doesn’t land. Coach Klein from The Waterboy is a commitment to a specific energy that not everyone has the patience for after midnight. Get the right people for each role or the theme falls apart in the middle.

The American Teds Taking Charge

Ted Lasso, Ted Mosby, Ted Beneke, Ted Wheeler, Ted Striker

The concept is that everyone is named Ted and in over their head to some degree, which is either very funny or requires too much explanation depending on your crowd. Ted Striker from Airplane! is the strongest visual. Ted Mosby in a suit is easy to build. Ted Wheeler from Stranger Things is only recognizable to people who pay close attention to secondary characters. The theme needs to be explained at least once to land as a group, but once it does, it usually gets a good reaction.

The Wholesome Mustache Mentors

Ted Lasso, Mr. Rogers, Ned Flanders, Uncle Iroh, Bob Ross

This is probably the most universally recognized group on this list. Every character here is known for being kind, patient, and slightly at odds with the general chaos around them. Mr. Rogers and Bob Ross read immediately to anyone over 20. Uncle Iroh reads to anyone who watched Avatar. The mustaches tie the group together visually in a way that makes for a very good group photo. I’d do this one.

Ted Lasso Halloween Costume DIY Tips

What to Buy vs. What You Probably Own

Ted’s costumes are built from items that already exist in most people’s wardrobes. The specific AFC Richmond branding is the exception. Here’s the honest split:

  • Track jacket or sweater: buy it. This is the only item that is character-specific in the casual look.
  • Fake mustache: buy it. This is the other item that is character-specific in both looks.
  • Navy Oxford shirt: most men own this. Check your closet.
  • Cream chinos: khakis work. Check your closet.
  • Whistle and lanyard: a few dollars and worth having.
  • Running shoes: anything grey, white, or neutral you already own is fine.
  • Black suit: if you own one, use it. If not, this is the priciest item in the suit look.
  • Black tie: most people have one already. The dotted tie is the more specific option.

Playing the Character Without Overdoing It

Ted Lasso is not a loud character. He is warm, specific, and genuinely interested in whoever he is talking to. That is actually very easy to play at a party without performing anything.

  • Ask people questions and actually listen. Ted does this. It reads as the character without you having to say anything about it.
  • The three quotes in the FAQ section are all short and work perfectly in natural conversation. The tea one lands with British people especially well.
  • The whistle moment: someone makes a good point, someone does something right, someone says something unexpectedly clever. Blow once. Nod. Nothing else needed.
  • Ted never raises his voice. Keep your delivery calm and slightly slower than you’d normally speak. It creates the impression that you’ve thought about what you’re about to say, even if you haven’t.
  • If someone asks what you’re supposed to be and they don’t get it immediately, say “American football coach managing an English soccer club” and watch them get there on their own. Don’t explain further.

Ted Lasso Halloween Costume: FAQ

Two options. Track jacket look: navy Oxford shirt, AFC Richmond track jacket or sweater, cream chinos, grey running shoes, fake mustache, and a whistle on a lanyard. Suit look: black two-piece suit, white dress shirt, red and white dotted tie, white pocket square, and black dress shoes. The mustache is essential for both. Pick the look based on how formal the party is and how comfortable you want to be for four hours.

Three that work well in actual conversation:

  • “I do believe in ghosts. But more importantly, I think they need to believe in themselves.”
  • “There’s two buttons I never like to hit: that’s panic and snooze.”
  • “I always thought tea was going to taste like hot brown water. And do you know what? I was right.”

The tea one is the one to pull out if you’re at a British-themed party or if someone offers you tea. Deliver it with complete sincerity. Do not smile first.

Ted Lasso ran from 2020 to 2023 and it has held its cultural presence well. Adults in their 30s and up will recognize it quickly, especially with the track jacket and mustache. Younger crowds may need a beat to place it, but the combination of AFC Richmond branding and the whistle makes it readable fast once someone gets there.

Yes. It is the single most identifying feature of the character. Without it, the track jacket alone could be anyone in sportswear, and the suit alone is just a man in a suit. The mustache is what makes the costume a costume. Grow your own if you have the lead time. Otherwise buy one and apply it properly.

It gives you a prop with a social function. One blow at the right moment, followed by silence and a nod, is funnier than any quote you could deliver. Use it twice all night, maximum. It also gives you something to hold, which is more useful than it sounds over the course of several hours.

Track jacket if the party is casual, outdoor, or you want to be comfortable all night. Suit if it’s a more formal event or you already own a good black suit and don’t want to buy a track jacket. Both are immediately recognizable with the mustache on. The track jacket is the more widely known look from the show, but the suit has a certain press-conference dignity that the character also earns.

Ted Lasso is an American college football coach from Kansas who is hired to manage AFC Richmond, an English Premier League soccer club, by the club’s new owner. He knows very little about soccer and a great deal about people. The Apple TV+ series, played by Jason Sudeikis, ran from 2020 to 2023 and won multiple Emmy Awards including Outstanding Comedy Series.
