Halloween Costume Guide
Two looks, one extremely awkward teen. The preppy blazer build or the kidnapping beach scene โ both start with the same wig.
Percy spends most of No Hard Feelings (2023) being nervously managed by adults who have decided what’s best for him. He’s played by Andrew Barth Feldman as someone dressed by his parents, not by himself. The layered preppy look โ blazer, oxford, striped tie, shorts, socks pulled up โ is the version most people remember. The wig is what makes it read at a party.

The blazer over shorts is what people read first. If the blazer is off โ wrong color, wrong fit, looks like a real outfit instead of someone’s mom’s idea of an outfit โ the character doesn’t land. The wig needs to be in place before the blazer goes on. A wig that sits wrong under a collar is harder to fix than one you pinned correctly at home.
Percy does not hold eye contact. He responds to questions with slightly too much information and then goes quiet. At a party, this means you answer things a beat too thoroughly and then look at your shoes. It’s funnier than it sounds after the third time, and it requires almost no effort to maintain for a full night.
The Wig Under the Collar
Pin the wig at the crown before the blazer goes on. If you put the blazer on first and then try to tuck the wig underneath, it bunches at the back of the neck and looks wrong all night. Thirty seconds of pinning at home is the difference between a wig that stays and one you’re fixing every hour.
Choosing the Right Look for Your Group
If your Maddie is doing the beach version, go with the kidnapping look so the scene is obvious. If you’re going solo or your group is just doing No Hard Feelings characters generally, the preppy blazer version is the one that reads without Maddie next to you. The yellow shorts alone won’t place the character for most people.
The Montauk Dating Scheme
Strong, if everyone has seen the film. This is the cast of the actual movie and the premise is self-explanatory once you put them together. The problem is that Laird and Allison are minor enough that most people at the party will only recognize Maddie and Percy. Two recognizable characters out of four is still a workable group, but don’t expect the whole setup to land with strangers.
Helplessly Sheltered Teens
This works better than it looks on paper. Each character has a distinct visual identity, and “kids who are not ready for the world” is a theme that reads without explanation. Morty and Young Sheldon are more widely recognized than Percy among casual viewers, which actually helps the group โ they anchor the concept for people who haven’t seen the film.
The Socially Awkward Honor Roll โ Niche
Niche. Velma and Dustin are immediately recognizable to most people. Percy is not. The group concept is funny to people who know all four, but half your party will see three obvious costumes and one person in a blazer. Fine if your group finds that funny too. Not fine if you want the concept to land broadly.
The wig is the only item you almost certainly don’t own. Everything else has a reasonable substitute in most closets. The blazer is the second priority buy โ fit matters and it’s hard to fake a blazer with something else.
Percy is anxious but not visibly panicking. He’s someone who overthinks before speaking, not someone who’s obviously nervous from across the room. The character plays better in small doses than in constant performance.
Two looks to choose from. For the preppy version: brown short wig, blue oxford shirt, striped tie, blazer, Levi’s shorts, black belt, crew socks pulled up, and Vans. For the kidnapping look: brown short wig, custom graphic tee, yellow shorts, retro striped socks, blue analog watch, navy backpack, and Nike sneakers. The wig is essential for both.
Percy doesn’t have widely quoted one-liners. His humor comes from nervous reactions and overthought responses throughout the film. The character’s most memorable moments are situational, not verbal.
Recognition has faded since the film came out in summer 2023. Most people won’t place Percy on his own. This costume works best as a couples build with Maddie, where the premise is obvious without explanation.
One is enough. The preppy blazer look is more recognizable as a costume choice on its own. The kidnapping look is funnier if your Maddie partner is doing the beach scene version, but without her it reads as a plain white tee and yellow shorts.
Not required, but it helps a lot. On his own, Percy reads as a nervous preppy kid to people who saw the film. With a Maddie next to him, the whole premise is clear without anyone needing to ask.
Percy is the sheltered 19-year-old son of wealthy Montauk parents in No Hard Feelings (2023), played by Andrew Barth Feldman. His parents hire Maddie, played by Jennifer Lawrence, to date him before he leaves for Princeton. He is anxious, over-prepared academically, and genuinely unprepared for anything that isn’t school.
