Halloween Costume Guide
Mabel Pines spends her summer in the fictional town of Gravity Falls, Oregon, getting tangled up in gnome weddings, shape-shifting monsters, and a floating demon named Bill Cipher, usually while wearing a different hand-knit sweater every episode. Her twin brother Dipper gets top billing on the mystery-solving, but the show has been explicit that Mabel is sharper than she lets on and plays a direct role in every major fight against Bill. The sweater and the grappling hook are the two items that make this costume specifically Mabel rather than a generic colorful outfit. Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch based Mabel on his own twin sister, and the character is voiced by Kristen Schaal.

The sweater is what people register first, and it needs to be loud, patterned, and a little chaotic, not a soft neutral knit, or the whole costume reads as “person in a nice sweater” instead of Mabel. Without the grappling hook in hand, that impression sticks even with the right sweater on. At a dim party, skip the blush before you skip the sweater, since the sweater is doing almost all of the recognition work by itself.
Mabel spends an entire summer getting proposed to by a swarm of gnomes, hallucinating into a candy-colored dreamscape after eating too much Smile Dip, and helping her brother fight off a literal demon, and somehow treats all of it with the same enthusiasm she’d bring to a karaoke night. She once told a room full of gnomes trying to marry her exactly what she thought of them. That mix of sincerity and zero filter is the whole character.
Don’t overthink the exact sweater design
Mabel wears a new one almost every episode, so there’s no single “correct” pattern to chase. Bright, busy, and homemade-looking beats trying to track down one exact screen-accurate design.
Keep the grappling hook out of your bag
It only works as an identifier if people can actually see it. Clip it somewhere visible instead of stashing it, or you’re just someone in a colorful sweater for most of the night.
Couples or Sibling Idea
Excellent pairing, since the twins are the actual center of the show and instantly recognizable together. Mabel’s bright sweater next to Dipper’s pine tree hat and vest is a visual match most people will place immediately, whether they’ve seen the show or not.
Duo Idea
Strong duo for people who know the show, since Wendy is a core Mystery Shack character, but the pairing works better as a fandom nod than something a stranger reads at a glance. Wendy’s flannel-and-beanie look gives a nice contrast to Mabel’s sweaters either way.
Group Idea: Gravity Falls Squad
Excellent group, and about as close to a can’t-miss option as this site has, since it’s the full core cast of the Mystery Shack. Anyone who’s seen even a few episodes will recognize the lineup immediately, and the costumes vary enough visually, sweater, flannel, suit, mechanic gear, that the group reads well in photos too.
Group Idea: Iconic Animated Mystery-Solving Kids
Might work, but the theme is a bit of a stretch since Coraline isn’t really a mystery solver in the Scooby-Doo sense, she’s more of an accidental explorer of a very wrong alternate world. The visual variety still carries it: Daphne’s purple dress, Velma’s orange sweater and glasses, and Coraline’s blue hair and yellow raincoat all read on sight even if the connecting theme needs a sentence of explanation.
This is one of the more thrift-friendly costumes on the site, since the whole point is a slightly mismatched, homemade look.
Mabel’s whole energy is enthusiastic, a little chaotic, and completely unfiltered. Lean into all three.
Start with a bright, patterned sweater like her signature turtleneck, add the purple mini skirt, white socks, and black flats, then finish with the pink headband and wig if your own hair doesn’t already match. Carry the grappling hook prop for the detail that makes it unmistakably Mabel.
Yes. Gravity Falls has stayed in circulation through reruns and streaming since it ended in 2016, and the 2024 follow-up special The Book of Bill brought a fresh wave of attention back to the whole cast. Mabel’s ever-changing sweaters also make her one of the more visually distinct animated characters to dress as, which helps recognition.
To a crowd of gnomes trying to marry her: “You guys are butt-faces!” On karaoke night: “Grunkle Stan, karaoke isn’t about sounding good. It’s about sounding terrible together.” And ahead of trick-or-treating: “I’m so excited! We’re gonna have the best costumes, get the most candy, and have the biggest stomach aches ever!”
Kristen Schaal, who creator Alex Hirsch has said was always his first choice for the role (IMDb). Mabel is loosely based on Hirsch’s own twin sister, Ariel.
It’s a running visual gag built into her character design, each sweater usually has its own pun or picture tied to that episode’s plot. There’s no single canon sweater, which is actually good news for a costume, since almost any colorful, patterned one gets the idea across.
Mabel’s pet pig, which she wins at a fair in the episode “The Time Traveler’s Pig.” He shows up constantly throughout the series and makes an easy, recognizable prop for a costume.
She matters more than she gets credit for in-universe. Mabel plays a pivotal role in all three of the twins’ confrontations with the show’s main antagonist, Bill Cipher, to the point that Dipper says outright he has no chance of beating Bill without her (Wikipedia).
