Halloween Costume Guide
Papyrus patrols Snowdin forest setting elaborate puzzles to catch a human, because a successful capture is the only thing standing between him and the Royal Guard spot he has been chasing his entire life. The skull mask is the single item that makes this costume specific. Undertale was developed and published by Toby Fox in September 2015 (Wikipedia), and Papyrus remains one of the game’s most recognized characters. At a gaming event, people will know exactly who you are. At a general Halloween party, skeleton reads before Papyrus does.

The skull mask is what people read first, and if it does not have the tall geometric shape and wide-toothed grin, the rest of the build has nothing to anchor it. The bodysuit needs to fit close to the body. If it is loose, the armor pads and blue briefs shift out of position and the whole theatrical silhouette collapses into a man in camo-colored foam. The three red items, the scarf, the gloves, and the boots, need to match in shade. A slight mismatch reads as assembled from different sources rather than a specific character.
Papyrus builds a tile-walking puzzle in Snowdin’s forest and is so proud of it that he calls the protagonist during the puzzle to explain the correct path through, because the challenge needs to be fair. He spent real effort on that puzzle. He does not notice the problem.
Order the Mask at Least Two Weeks Out
Papyrus-specific skull masks are not stocked at most Halloween shops. Shipping on specialty items slows significantly in October. A standard oval skull mask from any shelf is not a workable substitute. The elongated proportions and wide grin are the only things that make the mask read as this character rather than any skeleton.
Apply the Gaffer Tape After the Boots Are On
Yellow gaffer tape pressed onto the boot tops while the boots are off your feet will peel at the edges within an hour of walking. Put the boots on first, then press the tape firmly along the top edge while wearing them. Smooth each edge down with your thumb. It holds much better over a long night that way.
Duo Idea
Excellent sibling pairing if the person playing Sans commits fully to the lazy slouch and the pun delivery. The visual contrast between Sans’s casual everything and Papyrus’s full theatrical armor is the entire relationship in one image. Anyone who knows the game places it without explanation. Sans has no guide here yet, so that build works from reference images of the character.
Group Idea: Skeleton Crew
Strong group if everyone commits to their specific skeleton character rather than a general skeleton look. The visual range across the four designs is wide enough that no two costumes overlap. Undertale fans will recognize the AU characters immediately. The Jack Skellington addition keeps it readable for a crowd that missed the fandom era.
Group Idea: Video Game Characters
Strong group for a gaming crowd. Each character has a clear silhouette and a distinct color palette, so the group reads as intentional from a distance. Papyrus is the only one in armor, which gives the group visual variety. Most partygoers will recognize at least two of the four even without knowing Undertale.
Group Idea: Cross-Fiction Adventurers
Might work, but this is a concept group rather than a narrative one, and it only lands for people who appreciate that distinction. What the four share is genuine enthusiasm for a mission most people around them find baffling. That reading requires some explanation at a loud party, but it is a more interesting through-line than “characters we like.”
Most of this build is thrift-friendly. The mask is the only item with no real substitute, so spend there. Everything else has a workable alternative if you look.
Papyrus is not in on the joke. He is THE GREAT PAPYRUS and he is completely serious about it. The moment you wink at the character, it stops working.
Start with the black spandex bodysuit as the base. Layer the white armor shoulder pads and blue and gold briefs on top. Wrap the red scarf loosely around your neck so it drapes down the front of the armor. Add the red knit gloves, put on the red rubber boots, press yellow gaffer tape along the top edges, then put the skull mask on last. The mask and scarf are what people read first.
Yes, for the right crowd. Undertale turned 10 in 2025 and still has an active fanbase, and Papyrus is one of the most recognized characters in the game. At gaming events and conventions, recognition will be near-universal. At a general party, the skeleton mask reads as a skeleton before it reads as Papyrus, so expect to explain it to roughly half the room.
His signature catchphrase is “NYEH HEH HEH!” His battle cry: “NYEH! THE GREAT PAPYRUS WILL CAPTURE YOU!” On the Genocide Route, he confronts the protagonist directly: “THE WAY YOUR HANDS ARE ALWAYS COVERED IN DUSTY POWDER… IT FEELS… LIKE YOUR LIFE IS GOING DOWN A DANGEROUS PATH.” His final line in the True Pacifist route: “BELIEVE IN YOU!!!”
Papyrus is from Undertale, an indie RPG developed and published entirely by Toby Fox in September 2015. He is Sans’s younger brother and serves as the game’s second boss. His original development name during production was Times New Roman, keeping the font-naming theme that runs through the skeleton characters (Undertale Wiki).
The Battle Body is an armor costume Papyrus designed and built himself for a costume party, which he liked so much that he started wearing it as his everyday patrol outfit. The white chest plate, red scarf, and blue briefs with gold belt are all part of this self-designed look. He considers it the right outfit for capturing humans and finally joining the Royal Guard.
Nobody knows, including Papyrus. He has never tried it himself. He cooks it because, as far as he can tell, everybody loves it. He learned from Undyne, who is also not a good cook. Most characters who taste it in the game give answers that suggest strong feelings, but not positive ones.
He has two alternate looks in the game. The Cool Dude outfit appears during the hangout at his house: a backward baseball cap, a jersey with “COOL DUDE” printed on it, shorts, and sneakers. The Jog Boy outfit appears in athletic scenes: a sweatband, a sleeveless tank top with “JOGBOY” on the front, and athletic shorts. Both are worth knowing if you want a less common version of the character.
