Halloween Costume Guide
The Rogue Prince. Dark Sister at his hip. Everyone’s favourite reason the Dance of the Dragons went so wrong.
Daemon Targaryen is the younger brother of King Viserys I and the most volatile member of the Targaryen court. He commands Caraxes, carries the Valyrian steel blade Dark Sister, and spends most of the series deciding whose side he is on. Matt Smith plays him in House of the Dragon, the HBO prequel to Game of Thrones set roughly 200 years before that story. The show premiered in 2022 and has a large active audience, which means the costume will land at most parties without much explanation.

The wig is what people see first, and if it is sitting wrong, the rest of the costume has to work twice as hard to recover. Get it flat and positioned before you leave the house. For the black look, the contrast between the pale hair and dark costume is doing most of the recognition work. If the wig looks like a fashion piece rather than Targaryen hair, you lose that contrast and the costume reads as general fantasy instead of specific character.
There is a scene early in the series where Daemon sits on the Iron Throne, alone, clearly certain he belongs there, and waits to see what happens. He is not performing confidence. He just genuinely cannot imagine why anyone would disagree with him. That is the character at a party: settled, slightly amused, always slightly ahead of whatever is happening. He does not explain himself, and he does not need to.
Wear the boots in before Halloween
Baroque knee-high boots are not party-broken out of the box. Wear them around the house for a few sessions before the night. The shaft of a tall boot needs to soften before it sits comfortably, and finding that out at hour two of a party is not the discovery you want. If they have laces or buckles, figure out the fastest way to put them on and take them off, because you will need to know that at 2am.
The sword needs a venue check
Many events allow obviously prop medieval swords without issue. Some do not allow any prop weapons regardless of material. Check the venue policy before bringing the sword. If you cannot bring it, the dragon egg candle is the better prop anyway because it gives you something to carry in a crowd without bumping into people. A sword on a baldric at a busy venue is a structural hazard that gets old fast.
Group Idea: House of the Dragon
Excellent group for any crowd that watched the show. All four characters have clear visual identities, the costume builds are all achievable, and the group dynamic reflects the central conflict of the series without needing explanation. Daemon and Rhaenyra are the obvious anchor pair. Alicent and Viserys round it out and make the political tension readable at a glance for anyone who knows the show.
Group Idea: Silver-Haired Fantasy Rulers
Strong group if everyone commits to the hair. The platinum and silver-haired rule across four different fantasy worlds is a concept that lands visually before it needs to be explained. Daenerys is widely recognised. Geralt has strong recognition from both the books and the Netflix show. Galadriel is more niche in the Rings of Power version but still readable. All four costumes hold up independently.
Group Idea: Same Actor
Strong concept for a group that knows their Matt Smith filmography. The Eleventh Doctor is the most recognisable entry and does the most work at a general party. Prince Philip from The Crown is recognisable to a slightly older audience. Loxias Crown from Morbius is niche, and the film was not a critical success, so that costume may need explaining at most venues. The hook is clear and funny if everyone commits.
Group Idea: Same Name
Might work, but this group is entirely dependent on the crowd. Damon Salvatore from The Vampire Diaries has strong recognition among fans of the show. Big Daddy from Kick-Ass is a cult favourite. The Daemon/Damon name link is a funny concept, but at a general Halloween party most people will need it explained, which somewhat defeats the purpose. Works well at a party where everyone knows the references.
Group Idea: Anti-Hero Princes
Might work, but the connection is loose. Jon Snow and Loki are well-recognised and the costumes read clearly. Prince Charming from Shrek is funny because the character is deliberately awful. Daemon fits the anti-hero framing but the visual contrast between a Targaryen lord, a Night’s Watch ranger, an animated villain, and a Norse god is a lot for one group concept to hold together. At a convention this lands better than at a general party.
Both looks are straightforward builds. The standard version has fewer pieces and is easier to wear for a long evening. The black version is more striking but takes longer to put together and has more components to manage.
Daemon operates on the assumption that he is the most interesting person in any room, and he is usually right. He does not perform this. He just behaves accordingly.
The platinum wig is the first thing people will notice, so get that right. Pair it with the Targaryen costume and knee-high baroque boots. Add a clips brooch at the collar and a black knight belt at the waist. For the black look, swap in the black costume, add a prop sword on a baldric belt, and carry the dragon egg candles if you want a conversation piece.
Yes, and more so than most TV characters from 2022 onward. House of the Dragon has a large active fanbase, and Daemon is the character people remember most clearly. The platinum hair and black armour silhouette are distinctive enough that people who never watched the show will still read it as high fantasy royalty, which is a reasonable fallback.
Two lines follow him. The first is a threat delivered as a statement of fact: “A lord should not love his sword more than his kingdom.” The second is his declaration to Rhaenyra: “I would burn this city to the ground for you.” Both lines say everything about who he is: someone who operates by his own logic and expects the world to catch up.
Daemon is played by Matt Smith, a British actor known for playing the Eleventh Doctor in Doctor Who and Prince Philip in The Crown. House of the Dragon premiered on HBO in 2022 as a prequel to Game of Thrones, set roughly 200 years before the events of that series (Wikipedia).
Daemon’s sword is Dark Sister, a Valyrian steel blade that was originally wielded by Queen Visenya Targaryen. It is a slender, single-handed sword and part of Daemon’s identity throughout the show. A prop knight sword on a baldric belt gets the silhouette right for a costume build.
The first look is the general Targaryen court costume: coloured tunic, belt, brooch, and boots. The second is the all-black version Daemon wears as a warrior and commander, closer to his Dragonstone and battlefield appearances. The black version is more dramatic and reads more as a villain, which depending on your goal is either better or worse.
Pick one. The black look is more striking in a dark venue and reads more immediately as Targaryen. The standard look is easier to wear for a full evening because the all-black costume with sword and belt gets heavy. If you are going to one party, go black. If you are wearing it for several hours, the standard look is more comfortable.
The strongest couple pairing is Daemon and Rhaenyra Targaryen, which is also the central relationship of the show. For groups, the full Black Council is the most coherent concept: Daemon, Rhaenyra, Alicent Hightower, and King Viserys. Everyone in that group has a clear visual identity and the show’s fanbase will recognise all four immediately.
