Halloween Costume Guide
Allison Watts spends Halloween night in Salem using her knowledge of the occult to help Max and Dani Dennison fight the Sanderson sisters. The cream ball gown is the most recognizable look, but the casual layered outfit is the more practical Halloween party build. Hocus Pocus is a 1993 Disney Halloween film directed by Kenny Ortega (Wikipedia). It became a seasonal staple through decades of Disney Channel broadcasts and gained a fresh audience with the 2022 Disney+ sequel.

The ball gown’s cream color is the detail that either works or does not. Too white reads as bride; too yellow reads as wrong-era formal. For the casual look, both the plaid skirt and the red shawl need to be worn together. Either one alone is just a girl in a skirt or a girl in a shawl, and neither of those reads as anything specific.
In the film, Allison is the one who draws the salt circle while Max is still figuring out what is happening. She knows what salt does before anyone asks. That kind of quiet, practical knowledge is the character at a party. She is not trying to impress anyone with what she knows. She just knows it and uses it when the moment calls for it.
Lace heels and outdoor parties
If Halloween night involves any time outside, lace heels on uneven pavement or grass are a real problem. The ball gown look was designed for an indoor party scene, not a Salem street. Either plan to stay inside, swap the heels for flat lace-up shoes that are close in style, or accept that the heels go on after you arrive and come off before anything uneven starts.
The shawl position matters
The red shawl reads most clearly as Allison when it is draped evenly over both shoulders, not pulled to one side like a fashion wrap. If it keeps sliding, a single small safety pin at the center back of the neckline keeps it in place without showing from the front. Do not pin it to the shirt, or you will pull the shirt out of the belt every time you move.
Couples Idea
Strong couple concept for anyone who has seen the film. Allison in the ball gown or casual look paired with Max in his 1990s teenager outfit is the film’s central couple. The pairing requires both people to know Hocus Pocus, and recognition outside that crowd is limited. Max has no CostumeRealm page, so that costume needs to be built from the film’s reference images.
Duo Idea
Strong duo with good visual contrast. Allison in a ball gown or casual look alongside Dani in her classic witch costume makes a clean pairing from the film. Dani’s witch costume is the more universally readable of the two. Together they work because one is a clear Halloween costume and the other adds the Hocus Pocus context. Dani has no CostumeRealm page and needs to be built from scratch.
Group Idea: Hocus Pocus Cast
Excellent group for a Halloween party in 2026. The Sanderson Sisters carry the immediate recognition and their costumes are visually striking. Allison, Max, and Dani alongside three recognizable witches reads as Hocus Pocus even to people who have not seen the film recently. Winifred, Mary, and Sarah all have CostumeRealm guides. Max and Dani need to be built from reference images.
Group Idea: Iconic Halloween Characters
Might work, but Kevin McCallister is from a Christmas film, which makes the Halloween theme loose on one end. Wednesday Addams, Coraline, and Lydia Deetz all carry strong spooky-season credentials and high current recognition. Allison is the least immediately recognizable of the group without a Sanderson Sister next to her. All five characters have CostumeRealm guides, so the individual builds are well-supported.
Both versions of this costume are straightforward builds. Nothing needs to be fabricated or specially modified. Most of the work is sourcing the right shades.
Allison knows things she does not make a point of announcing. When she uses that knowledge, she does it practically and moves on. At a party, this is the cleanest character to play because the energy is calm and specific rather than performed.
Two looks to choose from. The ball gown version needs four items: cream Victorian ball gown, Victorian heart necklace, drop earrings, and lace low heels. The casual look needs eight items, with the plaid skirt and knit red shawl doing the most recognition work. The casual build is more comfortable for a full night; the ball gown is more immediately recognizable as the character.
Hocus Pocus recognition in 2026 is very high, sustained by decades of Disney Channel rotation and the 2022 Disney+ sequel. Allison is less immediately recognizable than the Sanderson Sisters, but anyone who knows the film will place the ball gown quickly. The casual look needs more context to land at a general party.
Allison does not have widely cited standalone lines from the film. The quotable dialogue in Hocus Pocus belongs almost entirely to the Sanderson Sisters. The closest Allison gets to a memorable beat is being called “a clever little white witch” by Winifred, which is a line she receives rather than one she delivers.
Vinessa Shaw, who also appeared in Eyes Wide Shut (1999) and 3:10 to Yuma (2007) (IMDb). Shaw did not reprise the role in Hocus Pocus 2. Allison, Max, and Dani appear briefly in the sequel as background extras during a 1993 flashback, but none of the original cast returned for those scenes.
The ball gown is more recognizable as the character and works well for an indoor party. The casual look is more comfortable if you are going to be on your feet or outside for any significant amount of time. If recognition matters more than comfort, go ball gown. If you need to move freely for several hours, go casual.
She helps Max and Dani fight the Sanderson sisters after Max accidentally resurrects them on Halloween night. She knows the occult well enough to be useful: she uses a salt circle to hold the witches in place and tries to stop Max from lighting the black flame candle. She is right about the candle. Max lights it anyway.
Briefly, and not played by Vinessa Shaw. In the 2022 Disney+ sequel, Allison, Max, and Dani appear in a flashback set in 1993, played by uncredited extras rather than the original cast. Shaw was not involved in the sequel.
