Halloween Costume Guide
She opened the box. Now she has to live with what came out of it.
Riley spends the film trying to get clean and accidentally opening a door she cannot close. She finds the Lament Configuration in a dead man’s vault, solves it without knowing what it does, and spends the rest of the movie dealing with the consequences. Played by Odessa A’zion in David Bruckner’s 2022 Hulu reboot of the Hellraiser franchise, she is a young woman in practical clothes who ends up covered in things she did not plan for. The costume reflects that: casual, layered, and increasingly distressed by the end of the film.

The necklaces are the first thing people will look at, and they need to be worn together. A single chain reads as jewellery. Two chains layered at different lengths reads as a specific choice, and that specificity is what places the costume. If one of the two necklaces gets left at home, the whole detail disappears. The puzzle box in your hand or bag is the second thing people register. Without it, this is someone in casual clothes. With it slightly wrong, it just looks like a souvenir. Get a replica that has some weight to it.
Riley is not a horror character who makes speeches. She is someone trying to correct a mistake before it kills more people. In a key moment near the end of the film, she stops running and turns the configuration back on the person who opened it first, redirecting what was meant for her. That decision, made quietly under a lot of pressure, is the whole character. At the party, that translates to someone who is calm, a little worn down, and clearly aware of something that other people in the room are not.
Fake blood placement matters
If you want the distressed mid-film look, put fake blood on the shirt, not the face. Riley’s face stays relatively clean for most of the film’s horror sequences. Blood on the collar and one forearm reads more accurately than a heavily made-up face. Dried, not fresh: use a darker shade and let it set before the party so it does not transfer onto everything you touch.
The puzzle box is a conversation starter with one catch
People will ask to hold it. That is fine, it is also how you spend the next twenty minutes explaining the film. If you are happy doing that, carry it in your hands. If you would rather not spend the evening as a Hellraiser ambassador, keep it in the crossbody bag and take it out selectively. Either approach is valid. Just decide before you arrive.
Group Idea: Hellraiser 2022 Cast
Excellent group for horror fans, limited recognition everywhere else. Riley, The Priest, Trevor, and Colin are all connected through the Lament Configuration and Roland Voight’s estate. The visual contrast between Riley’s casual clothes and The Priest’s Cenobite look is genuinely striking. The problem is that the 2022 film never became the cultural moment that would make this group self-explanatory at a general party. Expect to explain it, and plan accordingly.
Group Idea: Modern Horror
Strong group if everyone commits to the distressed look. Riley, Maxine from X, Mia from Talk to Me, and Dr. Rose Cotter from Smile are all survivors of horror scenarios that got out of hand in very different ways. The connecting thread is not the supernatural threat but the person still standing at the end of it. Each costume is recognisable on its own, which means the group works even if people arrive at different times.
Group Idea: Same Name
Might work, but only at an event where people are actively paying attention. Three out of four characters share the name Riley: Riley from Hellraiser, Riley Abel from The Last of Us, and Riley from Talk to Me. Riley Matthews from Girl Meets World is the fourth, and her inclusion is what makes the concept either charming or confusing depending on who is in the room. The joke lands well if people catch it immediately. If they need it explained, the joke is over.
Group Idea: Niche Concept
Might work, but this is a convention concept more than a Halloween party concept. Riley with the puzzle box, Ash Williams with the Necronomicon, Indiana Jones with whatever he just found, and Lara Croft with something she should not have touched. The theme is clear and the visual variety is good. At a general party, only Indy and Lara will get instant recognition. Ash needs the right crowd. Riley needs the puzzle box to be obvious.
Most of this build can come from your existing wardrobe. The only items you likely need to buy are the necklaces, rings, and puzzle box. Everything else is a closet search first.
Riley looks progressively worse as the film goes on. If you want to capture that, you do not need much.
Riley’s look is built on layered basics: a baggy or wide-leg jean, a cropped tank or oversized t-shirt, and a pullover sweater you can tie around your waist. The layered necklaces worn together and the rings are what separate this from a generic casual outfit. The puzzle box prop is what gets you recognised as Hellraiser specifically.
For Hellraiser fans, yes. For a general party, recognition is limited. The 2022 film found its audience on Hulu but never crossed into the mainstream conversation the way some horror reboots do. Without the puzzle box clearly visible, the costume reads as casual clothes.
Riley is not a character defined by memorable one-liners. Her defining moment in the film is an action, not a speech: redirecting the configuration’s terms back onto Roland Voight rather than accepting them for herself. The Priest gets most of the memorable dialogue in the film. Riley gets the decision that matters.
Riley is played by Odessa A’zion. The film was directed by David Bruckner and released on Hulu in October 2022 (IMDb). It is a soft reboot of the Hellraiser franchise, not a sequel to any previous entry.
Skip it and the costume becomes a casual layered outfit. The puzzle box is the one prop that tells people you are doing Hellraiser rather than just wearing jeans and a tank top. It is also something useful to hold at a loud party.
Riley finds the Lament Configuration in a vault belonging to the wealthy Roland Voight. Solving the box opens a connection to the Cenobites. The film follows Riley trying to survive that deal and prevent others from being taken.
Two things help: both necklaces worn layered together, and a small amount of fake blood on the shirt. Riley spends much of the film in progressively worse shape. Dried dark blood on the collar or forearm reads as horror film character immediately. Keep the face mostly clean, as that is more accurate to the film than heavy face makeup.
