Robb had a strong sense of honor and justice that he received from his father. He was fair, caring, and willing to do anything to protect his family. He was close to his siblings, especially his half brother Jon, and had loving relationships with everyone.
Robb also considered his father Theon's congregation to be a brother to him. Unlike Roose Bolton, one of his central banner men, Robb saw no reason for torture, cruelty, or unnecessary execution, and treated his prisoners of war well and fairly.
He didn't want violence or war and tried to limit deaths and losses on both sides. He also expressed great sympathy for innocent war victims such as Martyn and Willem Lannister.
Robb had a surprisingly keen sense of warfare and strategy, a trait that completely surprised Tywin. Tywin had originally seen Robb as a stupid child who had no idea about the violence of the war and who would, after his first impression of the battle, "run back to Winterfell with his tail between his legs".
The Lannisters were quite surprised when Robb launched a breathtaking surprise attack at the Battle of Whisper Forest to destroy the western half of the Lannister armies under Jaime. Tywin also didn't expect Robb to be determined to trick hundreds of his own men to the east in a trick.
Sansa tells Joffrey that Robb is known to fight with his army's avant-garde and orders his forces where the fighting is fiercest. Robb's tactical skills and bravery in battle cause the Northerners to see Robb as a larger than life figure, and he quickly becomes known as the "young wolf" for his savagery in battle.
Robb's actions create narratives in the seven kingdoms that tell stories of how he rides his direwolf into battle and even turns into a wolf. Tywin mentioned to his war council in Harrenhal that Robb's men worship him and that he doubts that Robb will lose unless drastic measures are taken to ensure this.
